A never-before-heard live recording from a private collection. Coltrane performed his most famous work, “A Love Supreme”, just twice in public and a recording of this Seattle performance was never known to exist before now. This newly discovered live-recording of a Seattle performance of the Love Supreme suite is a revelation of historical significance.
The original “A Love Supreme” studio recording was made by Coltrane’s “Classic Quartet” – McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in December 1964. Up until now, there was thought to be only one live recording of the full “A Love Supreme” suite, but this Seattle version is also of the full suite and features an expanded band – 7 pieces – that includes the same Classic Quartet and Pharoah Sanders in his first official gig as part of Coltrane’s group. It is musically more adventurous/avant garde than the two earlier recordings.
