He travelled alone to Los \r\nAngeles, where he leaned into a caricature of himself: the washed-up \r\nEuropean musician landing in America to reinvent his life. This time, it \r\nwasn’t the musical all-rounder but the singer in J.Bernardt who boarded \r\nthe plane.  \r\n \r\nAt 64 Sound Studio, he worked with producer Paul Butler (Michael \r\nKiwanuka, Devendra Banhart), who created an intuitive environment in \r\nwhich Jinte found his most liberated vocal performance. “On my third\r\nsolo record, I truly felt for the first time what singing can feel like.” Los\r\nAngeles itself also left its mark. The city’s uncompromising energy\r\ncollided head-on with Jinte’s West Flemish instinct for restraint. “In the\r\nUS, there is no time for subtlety. You surrender to your impulses.”  \r\n \r\nMany of the songs were recorded live, in fiery one-take performances \r\nwith drummer Lewis Wright (Alabama Shakes), bassist Peter Randall \r\n(Adele), and keyboardist Mitchell Yoshida (Edward Sharpe \u0026amp; The \r\nMagnetic Zeros). The result is a more open and expansive sound. \r\nJ.Bernardt’s recognisable signature remains, but expands into a retro-\r\nmodernist sound, smouldering rhythms, and sprawling melodies. The \r\nMotown-like backing vocals of Lex Noblitt, Isabel Whelan and Dasha \r\nChadwick weave throughout the record, forming a thrilling \r\ncounterpoint to his vibrato. Butler's kaleidoscopic production makes it \r\nfeel as if every window in J.Bernardt’s mind has been thrown open at\r\nonce.
